  Our faculty

Like our student body, our faculty comes from several countries including Canada, U.S.A., New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Philippines. And also like our students, they have quickly formed a warm, collegial relationship dedicated to providing the best for our students.

All of our teachers are university graduates with degrees in education or fields related to their specialties and an average of 8 years teaching experience. All have previous experience teaching overseas and teaching students for whom English is a second language.

Name: Karen Miller
Position:Nursery, Reception, and Year 1


Karen Miller believes that 10 years from now it won't matter where she lives, but that she made a difference in the lives of a child and by extension a difference in the world.  This is her guide as she seeks to make her mark on the children entrusted in her care.  Karen Brown has been an educator for over 9 years.  She has taught both in the private and public school systems in her native home, Jamaica.  The past 3 years she has worked in the Bahamas and was formally introduced to the IB programme at Lyford Cay International School.  There she taught Pre-K, was in charge of 2 co-curricular clubs, served as chairperson on the Visual Arts Accreditation Committee and served as a member of 2 social committees that were both aimed at building staff morale.  She has received training in PYP Level 1, Literacy Framework, & Everyday Math.  She will be accompanied by her daughter and her husband.  She is looking forward to working in China and very excited to start the new school year.

Name: Jacqui Stenson
Position: Year 2/3

Jacqui¡¯s interest in Education began at a Playcentre in Hamilton, New Zealand. She completed her Preschool certificates and was Education Officer for Forest Lakes Playcentre. Jacqui then studied for her Bachelor¡¯s degree including Education as her minor subject. She traveled to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands and taught Preschool and New Entrants before teaching ESOL at High School level. Upon her return to New Zealand she completed her Diploma of Teaching in Dunedin. She was appointed to a Year 3-5 class on the West Coast for 2 years. Since then Jacqui has taught juniors at several rural Canterbury schools. Her most recent position, for the past three and a half years, was teaching a bilingual Year 0-3 class in Kaikoura. Jacqui was a Lead Teacher on the Ministry of Education¡¯s recent Literacy Project.
Name: TJANDRA PURNAMA
Position: Year 4 Teacher


Tjandra taught at Sekolah Ciputra (IB World School) in Indonesia for seven years prior joining to EtonHouse--Xian. He has been trained in the PYP and has attended several workshops in recent years. He has been adopting the PYP methodology for the past six years in his daily teaching.
Prior to moving to Xi'an, Tjandra taught a variety of year groups in Indonesia. He believes children learn best by doing and creates a learning environment where all children can develop physically, emotionally and socially encouraging them to become independent and confident learners. He has a bachelor degree in Education from Satya Wacana Christian University, Indonesia.

Name: Jeremy Van Sluytman
Position: Deputy Principal, PYP Coordinator, Year 5

Born in Ontario, Canada, Jeremy has taught EAL, music, and elementary homeroom classes in Ecuador, Venezuela, and China over the past 13 years.  Before coming to Xi'an Jeremy, his wife May, and their daughter Elizabeth lived in Wuxi, Jiangsu where Jeremy and May were at Taihu International School.  Jeremy and May were at Qingdao International School in the five years prior. This year the “Vans” join Xi'an Etonhouse with Jeremy as our Deputy Principal, PYP* Coordinator, and as the Year 5 homeroom teacher.

Name: Kareen Simpson
Position: Year 6/7

Kareen is a Jamaican that comes to EtonHouse, Xi’an with 10 years teaching experience.  She has taught English Language and English Literature in middle schools for 3 years, but has spent the last 7 years in her area of specialization - primary education.  Kareen has training in (IB) PYP level 1 and has taught grades 3 through 6. She is also a certified TESOL. (Teacher of English for Students of Other Languages). She loves children, and gets great fulfilment from working with them. She has one son, Ashani, who will be accompanying her. This is Kareen’s first time in China and she is very excited and looking forward to the enriching experiences that she will gain.

Name: Charlotte Maclean
Position: PYP/MYP/DP Visual Arts

Charlotte comes from New Zealand, where she taught Year 3, 4, and 5 students. She has a passion for literacy and numeracy. Charlotte has been trained in The Early Numeracy project and First Chance literacy. She came to China with her husband, Alasdair Maclean, and their daughter Isabel.  Since then she has taught at Taihu International School and had a second child, Max – born in China. Charlotte will come to Xi’an as the Art teacher and Mr. Van’s release teacher.

Name: JUDE VIZMANOS
Position:PYP/MYP/DP Music and Physical Education, Librarian


Jude Vizmanos is from the Philippines. He has been working with EtonHouse Xi’an since 2007. He teaches Physical Education and Music for Primary, Middle and Secondary students. He is also the Head Librarian. Jude has 15 years of experience performing and working in different fields of performing arts such as theatrical plays, movies, mini concerts, promotion and advertising activities as well as acting workshops. Jude also loves sports like soccer, basketball, and other individual and group games. He finds teaching exciting and is looking forward to another good year.
